Art therapy & my social work
This section is about a very important project for me.
Immediately after Russia started its full-scale invasion of Ukraine and my initial shock and horror had subsided, I knew that the best way I could personally help Ukrainians would be to support them with art therapy here in Germany. Almost immediately I found an organisation that was willing to help me in this mission – DJR Hessen e.V.
I started working there as a volunteer with Ukrainian teenagers. Soon, we received sponsorship from the Air Liquid Foundation for a fully-fledged art therapy project and gathered the first groups of women. The work in these groups was based on debriefing the shock of war and sudden resettlement, expressing feelings and finding inner and outer support to get out of the emotional hole that many of the participants were in.
Later, we also formed a group for mothers with children, dedicated to building a better connection between them in these difficult times, when other parts of their families were in extreme danger. This applied to many of the women who attended my groups. As the war continued, we started two more programmes (6 more groups) for them, and the project ended up running for almost a year.
I cannot express in words how touching and meaningful this work was. About 70 women took part and I am very grateful to all of them for their trust and commitment. The results and the art they produced were truly inspiring and moving. A glimpse of this work was captured in the video made by our sponsor, whom I also cannot thank enough for their support.
I am also open to more socially oriented projects like this to have a chance to be useful to people who need support and relief. This work is done for a reduced fee as my way of contributing.
